CLAX NEWS
As we head into another weekend of lacrosse, we celebrates the people, stories and shared effort that keep our club moving. We look back at the legendary “Buick Express” and the generations of members who made room for teammates and helped one another get to the game—a tradition of togetherness that still defines Camberwell today.
There is also plenty happening off the field, with our Community Bank Inner East Home Loan Health Check Night, recognition for our officials and volunteers, our call for members to help lead the 2027 Committee, and the first exciting details of our centenary celebrations.
Good luck to everyone playing, coaching, officiating and supporting this weekend—and thank you for continuing to make Camberwell Lacrosse Club such a strong and welcoming community.

Recently we acknowledged our officials who umpire our games.
Apologies to Izzy Hodder who was omitted from the list.
Izzy not only umpires women’s games, but co-ordinates and organises the umpires for all Girls’ and Womens’ games every week. Thankyou Izzy!
10c can and bottle collection
Thank you to everyone who mindfully places their 10c bottles and cans in the labelled bins. Approx 98% of the contents of these bins are cans and bottles. Participants are to be thanked for acknowledging the labels on the bins and placing the correct items in the appropriate bins!
Thank you to Jason Davenport who took a load to the recycling centre. We collected $66.60, but every contribution counts!
THE SHED
The Shed has been cleaned up and equipment sorted. Yay!
The shelves and tubs have been labelled.
Below are some photos of where to return equipment after use. This will help others to locate the items and to keep The Shed contents organised. Please look for the signs and labels when returning items!

Home loan health check night
We’re lucky to have Community Bank Inner East as one of our Gold Sponsors. What makes its model different is simple: when local people bank with them, part of the profit comes back into our community.

On Thursday 20 August, we’re teaming up to host a Home Loan Health Check Night.
Let’s be honest, most of us set up a home loan and then don’t look at it again for years. This is simply a chance to sit down with the Community Bank team, ask a few questions and check whether your current loan is still the right fit.
We’ll make a night of it from 5.30pm, with games for the kids, Piggy the mascot and a few giveaways. Everyone who books and attends a Home Loan Health Check will also receive a free pizza and two drinks.
There is also a genuine benefit for the club. The stronger the Community Bank becomes, the more it can invest in local organisations—supporting junior participation, player development, equipment, facilities and community programs.
So, have a look at your loan, enjoy a relaxed night at the club and potentially help Camberwell Lacrosse at the same time.

New to the club? Help us to help you. Your 2027 Committee.
As we begin looking ahead to the 2027 season, a number of key Committee positions will become available. Being part of the Committee is one of the best ways to contribute to the future of Camberwell Lacrosse Club and give something back to the community that has given so much to many of us.
Over the past few years we have worked hard to strengthen our governance by clearly defining Committee portfolios and building capable support teams around each role. This means no one is expected to do everything on their own, making it much easier for new volunteers to step into leadership positions with confidence.
In particular, we are seeking expressions of interest for the roles of President and Vice President. After three rewarding years as President, Michelle will be stepping down at the end of the season, while Ben has made the difficult decision to step aside as Vice President as his growing business no longer allows him to commit the time the role deserves.
Importantly, there will be a comprehensive handover and ongoing support to ensure a smooth transition, with Michelle remaining actively involved in the Club to assist the incoming President.
If you have ever thought about becoming more involved in shaping the future of our Club, we would love to hear from you. Please don't hesitate to speak with any Committee member to find out more about what the roles involve.

Buick Express – a trip down memory lane
Long before team buses, there was Cliff Jacobs and his enormous Buick.
Every weekend it became the unofficial junior transport. Players, sticks, boots and muddy gear were packed in wherever they would fit, as Cliff drove the team to Williamstown, Coburg, Eltham and beyond. The trip home—shoulder to shoulder, replaying the match—was often the best part of the day.
Those who missed the Buick squeezed into Horry Smith’s Hillman Minx, where the reward was often a swig from Horry’s famous flagon of “OT”. Nobody was quite sure what was in it, but on freezing, mud-soaked grounds it warmed the players up, watered the eyes and somehow got everyone through the second half.
The transport tradition continued through Doug Fox’s dad and his Ford Pilot, and later Bobby J’s plumber’s van, with players packed in around the tools and pipes.
Seatbelts may have ended some of the fun, but not the tradition behind it: people making room, helping each other get to the game and sharing the journey together.
Nearly a century later, that same spirit of togetherness remains at Camberwell Lacrosse Club—just, perhaps, with slightly safer transport.
