Women Retain Top Spot
It was a gala day at Dorothy Laver Reserve West as Camberwell Women's team took on MCC in a delayed round 6 game. The Camberwell women played short on Sunday but showed some real grit to power their way to a 20-8 victory over MCC and hold their top standing in the Division One competition.
With an 8-7 lead at half time the game was in the balance. When Melissa Hadden was sidelined with a rolled ankle, Camberwell needed to dig deep. They did so in the second half with the Hollenkamp sisters taking control and combining brilliantly with Laura Braakhuis and Cassidy Richards in a run of scintillating goals. Fiona Carroll was steadfast in the goals as the opposition battled unsuccessfully to break Camberwell’s tight defence. Poppy Ashby and Sophia Tatlis won some great ground-balls and made quick runs to take the ball forward and set up Camberwell attacking plays.
The club was delighted to see local Solway Ward Councillor, Garry Thompson and a number of local residents among the spectators. The subject of the Dorothy Laver Reserve proposed soccer facility was a hot topic of conversation, punctuated by some spirited cheering as the Camberwell goals flowed.
