Joel Easson wins game MVP honours at the Nationals

The VIC state team, trying to avoid a 5 year national title drought (which would be the longest in its history), is off to a great start, defeating regining champions WA 12-11 in OT last night. Joel Easson was named game MVP. What a great debut to his state representative career.

U13 Camberwell Blitz 17 def Melbourne University 2

With new player Tom Sharp lining up the Blitz finally had a bench, albeit of only one as Colby Gale missed with injury and Miles Cowton is still ill.

A piece of history - The Saxby Training Light

More than sixty years ago a small switch box and light was erected on a post between the edge of the road and the Francis Crescent playing field at the Saxby Road end where the club trained and often played matches.  It was put there by the club to control a single low-powered light used for mid-week training by the Camberwell-Glen Iris teams. Strangely it is still there - maybe it has been given heritage listing !

Camberwell  9 def Moreland 8

Playing without a substitutes bench Camberwell notched up an important victory in a tightly contested match at Eric Raven Reserve.  This kept the Wells in touch with the top four.  Jo Pagliaro was again the standout player, scoring 5 goals off the midfield and making fine running clears from defense.

The match could have gone either way in the second half but Loveday, Whelen and Stevenson chipped in with goals to get the Wells one goal ahead at the final break.

Camberwell  Blitz 4 lost to Surrey Park White 20

Playing the league leaders, Surrey Park White, Camberwell was swamped in the first quarter with a 7 to 1 goal barrage.  McKenna and Falconer-Boag were contesting well in the centre but Surrey had too much firepower in attack.  Back in the team for his first game this season after a foot injury, Zac Bigaignon made his presence felt with a nice goal from a strong outside shot for the Wells first score.

Under 11 underdogs diminish Malvern’s extreme winning streak

Under 11 underdogs diminish Malvern’s extreme winning streak.

With Camberwell Under 11 made up entirely of new players, we knew that Malvern were going to be tough to beat, having won most of their matches by 11 or more goals.

U13 Camberwell Derby is a thriller!

The Camberwell derby finished in a thrilling draw as our two Under 13 teams went head to head.

Both teams were short of players with a Scout hike taking 6 boys and 3 others missing with illness. The Magic set their stamp on the game with two strong opening goals with Fergus Boyd dominating the ground balls.  Blitz hit back through goals to the Whelen brothers and Ned McKenna to lock the game up 3 all at the quarter break.

Girls U11 match report

On Sunday, after competing in the regular season under 13 game, a team of Camberwell's under 11 girls participated in a round robin mini tournament at Altona. The girls played their first game against Eltham, taking a little while to get used to the softer ball and the short field. It was a good game with Tilly working hard on the crease, and Kira opening our account with a great first goal. We ran out winners 2-0.

Jennie Tames the Divvy Twos

When Joel Easson (current State League player) was recruited to play in the Under 12's, little did his mum Jennie know that a decade later she would be running up and down the lacrosse field brandishing a whistle.

U13 Match Report - Sat. 7th May

Camberwell Blitz 4 lost to Eltham 16
Playing the top ranked Eltham, the Blitz worked hard and showed growing grit and positional understanding. Frank McKenna and Rob Barber carried the goalie duties well and the Camberwell midfield chased hard with Ashby, Tubb and new player Liam Campbell impressing. Ned McKenna, Finn Whelen and Lachie Falconer Boag scored goals for Camberwell with Ed Whelen and Colby Gale making some slick passing and goal assists. The Blitz are handling the elevation from U11 well and can look forward to playing some of the lower ranked teams in coming weeks.
